Why the Right Tools Matter

Matcha isn't difficult - but it is technique-sensitive. The most common problems (lumps, poor froth, bitter taste) usually come down to skipping one step or using the wrong tool.

This kit covers every step:

Sift first. Matcha powder clumps easily. Running it through the fine stainless sifter before you whisk breaks up those clumps and gives you a smoother result from the first sip.

Use the right bowl. The wide chawan gives your wrist room to move. The pour spout means less mess when you transfer to a cup. The two-tone stoneware keeps your matcha at the right temperature while you work.

Whisk properly. The bamboo chasen is what creates the froth. A quick W or M motion for 20–30 seconds is all it takes - the 80-tine construction does the work.

Store the whisk right. Sitting a wet chasen flat damages the prongs over time. The ceramic holder keeps it upright and in shape, which extends the life of the whisk significantly.

The Ceramic

The bowl and whisk holder share the same two-tone finish - white glaze on the interior and upper half, natural unfinished stoneware below. It's a clean, tactile aesthetic that looks good on a bench and feels good in your hands. Not precious - practical and nice.

FAQs

What's included in the kit?

Five pieces: a bamboo chasen (whisk), a ceramic chawan (matcha bowl) with a pour spout, a ceramic whisk holder, a fine stainless steel sifter, and a stainless steel scoop. Everything comes in a magnetic gift box with a quick-start guide.

Do I need any experience to use this?

None. The kit is designed as a complete starter setup. If you can whisk, you can make matcha. The guide walks you through the process in five steps.

Does matcha powder come with the kit?

No - matcha powder isn't included. We'd recommend starting with a culinary or latte-grade matcha for your first few attempts, then moving to ceremonial grade once you're comfortable with the process.

What water temperature should I use?

Aim for around 70–80°C. Boiling water (100°C) can make matcha taste bitter and harsh. If you don't have a temperature-controlled kettle, boil the water and let it sit for two to three minutes before using.

Why is a whisk holder included?

Bamboo chasen prongs are delicate and shaped intentionally. Storing a wet whisk flat or crammed into a drawer will bend and break the tines over time. The ceramic holder keeps the whisk upright and in its correct shape so it lasts much longer and keeps performing well.

How long does a bamboo whisk last?

With proper care - rinsing after each use and storing on the holder - a quality chasen typically lasts three to six months with daily use. You'll notice the prongs starting to splay or break when it's time to replace it.

Why do I need to sift the matcha?

Matcha powder clumps easily, especially in humidity. Sifting before you whisk breaks those clumps up so they dissolve properly. Skipping the sifter is the most common reason matcha ends up lumpy or gritty.

Is this a good gift?

Yes - the magnetic box makes it genuinely gift-ready without needing extra wrapping. It's a practical, thoughtful gift for anyone who drinks matcha or is curious about trying it.
Can I use this kit to make iced matcha?
Absolutely. Whisk the matcha with a small amount of hot water first (to dissolve it properly), then pour it over ice and add your cold milk of choice. The wide bowl and pour spout make that easy.

Is the ceramic dishwasher safe?

We'd recommend hand-washing the ceramic pieces to preserve the glaze and finish. The bamboo whisk should always be hand-washed and never submerged - just rinse under warm running water.
