What does the diffuser plate actually do?

The diffuser plate sits inside the grouphead behind the shower screen. It receives pressurised water directly from the boiler and spreads it evenly across the shower screen before it reaches your coffee puck. On Breville and Sage Oracle and Dual Boiler machines this component is made from plastic — meaning near-boiling water under pressure passes through it on every single shot.

Is the plastic diffuser plate actually a problem?

Over time, yes. The plastic warps and degrades under repeated heat and pressure cycles, which causes uneven water distribution across the puck. This leads to channelling, inconsistent extractions, and bitter or sour flavours that are hard to dial out regardless of your grind or tamp. Which machines is this compatible with?

This fits Breville and Sage 58mm dual boiler machines: The Dual Boiler (BES920), Oracle (BES980), Oracle Touch (BES990), and Oracle Dual Boiler (BES995). It is not compatible with 54mm Breville machines (Bambino, Barista Express, Barista Pro) as those use a different grouphead design.

Do I need to replace the shower screen at the same time?

Not required, but worth doing. The diffuser plate and shower screen work together as the water distribution system in your grouphead. Pairing this with our High Diffusion Shower Screen upgrades the entire system at once and gives you the most consistent extraction across the puck.

How do I install it?

Unscrew the centre bolt on your shower screen and remove the screen. The plastic diffuser plate will lift straight out. Drop the stainless replacement in, refit the shower screen, and tighten the bolt back up. No special tools needed — the whole job takes under five minutes. Run a backflush before pulling your first shot.
